Palomino is a lovely little beach town, still pretty unknown to the tourist community in Colombia. Life here is quiet, slow, and local! The main thing to do is relax, and there are many ways you can do that here. Here are 5 things to do in Palomino:
1 . Tubing down Palomino River:
The most popular of the 5 things to do in Palomino is tubing down the Palomino River! This is certainly what drew me to the town. Everywhere you turn, there are small shops and roadside stores offering tubing. The process is simple, approach a store, pay 20,000cop and you will be driven on the back of a motorbike with your tube, down (and up) a dirt track to where they drop you off to the start of a walking track. You walk about 40mins up and down a dirt track to where the stream meets the river. You will cross the small stream to the big river, jump on your tube, and enjoy the ride!!
2 . Swim at Palomino beach
Swimming is quite popular here at this beach! It is hard to avoid the water, as it is way too hot here! While the water is deliciously warm here, the beach doesn’t provide the most relaxing swimming experience as there is also quite a strong current at times, and waves to dodge. If you walk to where the river meets the sea, you can swim in the sheltered area on the river side, which is much more calm and relaxing. Don’t swim too close to the river mouth though as it is deep and the current is strong.
3 . Surf at Palomino beach
Palomino is quite popular for surfing! So if you are a keen surfer, or wanting a few lessons, enjoy!! Aside from stacks of inner tubes outside shops, you will also see many signs advertising surf lessons and surfboard hire. I don’t know much about surfing… but I can vouch that there are waves here… :p
4 . Sunbathe and relax
It is hot here, have I said that already? So take some time and relax on the beach! There are also plenty of coconut trees lining the beach to take shelter from the sun when you have had enough of sunbathing.
Also, many hostels such as Dreamer Hostel Palomino (view/book it here) have their own pools for guests to swim in. The one at Dreamer Hostel is pretty huge! Many of the hostels available in Palomino are actually pretty top notch, with great shade areas, heaps of hammocks to relax in, cool settings, and close to the beach. The hostel scene is picking up pretty rapidly here. There are many hostels currently under construction! Which is good and bad. Bad in that the place is looking to get more popular, but good in that it will create some competition among the other hostels and keep prices down.
5 . Take in the local atmosphere
This town is very charming and local, and it is nice to just roam around the town and soak up the local atmosphere. It is a quiet wee town with dirt roads and a lot of local character. That is of course until there is a local wedding or a big birthday. You will be able to hear the party across the whole town throughout the night and until lunch time the next day.
There are many low-key local restaurants to hang out in with the locals, as well as several more upmarket restaurants that serve pizza, pasta and burgers. There are local fruit and vege shops, an ice cream shop, and plenty of small convenience stores. Let’s face it, travelling is often a lot about eating your way around a place!
